For some time now, “DIY” has been the search phrase in everyone’s Google search box, the hashtag in our Instagram posts, the swearword on everyone’s tongue, a goldmine for hardware stores, and a dream come true for every budget bride (big-ups to Pinterest)
Never has 3 letters joined together, made us feel so fashionable and cool, hip and happening.
Do It Yourself. Suzelle-ified. The DIY Revolution.
While the tech-driven world we live in tries to make everything easier for us to do, Do It Yourself has won this game six-love.
We live in a world of mass production, where trends are rules intended for us to follow. Where it’s hard to just be yourself and find the things that you can relate to. Find the things that you love. Instead, we are lead like sheep by the mass retail stores to buy into ideas that are funnelled down from some trend-setting committee.
If you walk into a mass retail store, you must know that whatever you are walking out with is not so authentic and real and one-of-a-kind; unless of course you think owning one of 482 of the same thing is. That’s right, every Tom, Dick and Delilah have the same rustic lamp stand you just spent a fortune on.
If it says Made In China, it isn’t “Oh so you-nique” honey.
Mass retail stores will always have their market, but if you are tired of watching a broken movie reel, I urge you to support your local crafters. The ones whose websites don’t fall on the first page of Google. The ones who don’t have a “Checkout” tab. The ones that put an element of themselves in everything they create.
Don’t confirm.
Deal with someone real.
“Make Something Awesome”.
